This design features Tūmatauenga. Tumatauenga holds dominion over Te ira tangata – Man- kind, human activity, strategy and war. Tu-Mata-Uenga – Tu of the angry face is one of the many names of Tū.
Tū earned many names during his conquest over his siblings, such as Tū-ka-riri – Tū the angry, Tū-ka-nguha – Tū the fierce fighter, Tū-kai-taua – Tū the destroyer of armies, Tū-mata-whāiti – Tū the cunning, Tū-whakaheke-tangata -Tū the demoter of personages, Tūmatauenga defeated all his siblings in combat shortly after Tawhiri had tried to do the same. Thus proclaiming after each victory that each atua’s children shall be food his children.
The toi Māori represents red skies, symbolic of Tūmatauenga
